Start with the decision

Choose a situation where staff need to recognise information, consider options or ask for help. A question about a definition may test recall, but it does not always show whether the learner understands what to do next in the workplace.

Keep the example realistic

Use a short fictional scenario with the information a worker would reasonably have. Leave out dramatic details that distract from the learning goal. If the task depends on a specific policy, provide the relevant context and explain where the learner can find it.

Make options meaningfully different

Each answer should represent a plausible choice. Avoid making the correct option much longer or more polite than all the others. Include feedback that explains the reasoning and the internal process, rather than only saying that the answer is correct.

Check the limits of the question

A quiz response is evidence of an online learning activity. It cannot demonstrate every practical skill, interpersonal behaviour or person-specific support task. Decide how supervision or observed practice will complement the knowledge check.

Test it with a reviewer

Ask someone who understands the role to complete the activity. If they disagree with the expected answer, clarify the scenario before launch. Care Enable can help design and review scenario-based learning as part of an agreed custom training project.

Scenario-based training: a practical team exercise

Ask a reviewer to explain their choice

Have a colleague complete a scenario question and explain why they selected an answer. If two answers seem reasonable, improve the context or options. Feedback should teach the reasoning and direct learners to the approved instruction.

Review these questions

  • What decision is being tested?
  • Is essential context missing?
  • Does feedback explain the next step?

Agree one improvement, nominate the person responsible and choose when to review it. Keep the exercise separate from decisions requiring specialist advice or role-specific authorisation.
