Begin with the person’s perspective
The NDIS Code of Conduct includes respect for individual rights and decision-making. In learning design, translate that broad expectation into a situation where a worker needs to listen, ask or adapt, rather than treating a routine as fixed.

Use a small everyday example
A person wants to change the order of planned activities. Ask the learner what information they need, how they would discuss the options and when they would seek support. The scenario should leave the person’s preferences central to the conversation.
Avoid a single ideal personality
People communicate choices in different ways. Do not write every example around a person who can give a long verbal explanation. Include different communication preferences and show staff that listening may involve patience, accessible information or the person’s chosen supports.
Connect the idea with reflection
A knowledge card can ask what the worker would do, but a later conversation can explore what actually happened. Encourage staff to notice when their own habits influence the choices they offer. Use fictional or appropriately anonymised material in group learning.
Make it part of induction
Include person-centred examples in policy lessons, communication training and day-to-day supervision. Care Enable’s course samples and custom induction options can support this learning, while your business sets the approved procedures and practical expectations.
Person-centred support training: a practical team exercise
Rewrite a staff-centred routine
Take a fictional instruction focused on completing a task quickly. Rewrite it to include how the person can express preferences and receive accessible information. Discuss the role of the worker when a choice needs further clarification.
Review these questions
- Is the person central?
- Are options explained?
- Does the worker know when to seek help?
Agree one improvement, nominate the person responsible and choose when to review it. Keep the exercise separate from decisions requiring specialist advice or role-specific authorisation.
