Treat preferences as individual
A diagnostic label does not tell a worker everything about communication. Start by asking the person, using their preferred approach, what helps them understand and express themselves. Where appropriate, involve the supports they choose rather than assuming another person should speak for them.
Offer information in manageable ways
A clear explanation may use shorter sentences, additional time, a visual prompt or another agreed communication tool. The aim is understanding, not making every conversation look the same. Check whether the chosen approach is useful to the person.
Check understanding respectfully
Avoid turning an ordinary conversation into a test. Invite questions, clarify what happens next and ask whether another explanation would help. A person may agree politely without having had enough information to make the decision they want.
Build realistic learning activities
Use a scenario where the worker must adapt an explanation or notice a communication barrier. Discuss why an option helps, and where the worker should seek advice. Keep the activity focused on the person’s preferences rather than a set of stereotypes.
Support practice after the course
Encourage staff to reflect on a recent interaction and identify one improvement. Care Enable’s communication topics can be part of a wider learning pathway, with your provider’s instructions and supervision giving the workplace context.
A practical learning-design guide. Adapt examples to your approved procedures, staff roles and support context.
Accessible communication: a practical team exercise
Explain one activity in two formats
Choose a fictional everyday activity and practise explaining it using two different communication approaches. Ask whether the information is clear and how the worker would check the person’s preference instead of assuming which approach is best.
Review these questions
- Is enough time available?
- Is the tool agreed?
- How can the person ask for clarification?
Agree one improvement, nominate the person responsible and choose when to review it. Keep the exercise separate from decisions requiring specialist advice or role-specific authorisation.
