Choose the workplace context
An emergency plan is easier to understand when staff know the environment it applies to. Identify the approved arrangements for the location, the people being supported and the worker’s role. Keep specific instructions under the control of the responsible manager.
Show where information is kept
A short induction activity can ask staff to locate the approved plan and relevant contacts. Test access for the circumstances in which staff work. A file that can only be opened from an unavailable office computer is not a useful reference during a difficult situation.
Consider communication and accessibility
Discuss how staff will communicate with the people they support using agreed approaches. Avoid assuming that every person can follow the same verbal instruction or use the same route. Individual needs should be reflected in the appropriate planning and practical preparation.
Combine learning with rehearsal
Online training can introduce the plan and check knowledge. It should sit alongside appropriate workplace familiarisation and exercises. Use a planned, supported activity to identify confusing instructions before there is an urgent need to act.
Update the learning when the setting changes
Review relevant lessons when contacts, locations or procedures change. Care Enable can help design learning based on your approved arrangements. Your provider remains responsible for the plan, individual requirements and practical preparation.

Emergency training: a practical team exercise
Find the relevant information
Ask a new starter to locate the approved emergency information for their work setting during a supported familiarisation activity. Check access and communication arrangements before evaluating whether instructions are clear.
Review these questions
- Is the plan current?
- Can staff access it during work?
- Which person-specific arrangements need review?
Agree one improvement, nominate the person responsible and choose when to review it. Keep the exercise separate from decisions requiring specialist advice or role-specific authorisation.
