An ongoing change, not a new announcement today
The NDIA began gradually introducing different funding periods to new and reassessed plans from 19 May 2025. Its guidance explains that this changes when funding becomes available, rather than the total amount in a plan. The individual plan remains the starting point.

Avoid one-size-fits-all explanations
A worker should not assume that every person has the same dates or available amounts. Decide who in your business checks funding information, how it is recorded and how staff raise questions. Keep responsibilities clear so support workers do not have to make budget decisions outside their role.
Connect coordination and communication
If a service arrangement needs clarification, communicate through the agreed contacts rather than promising an outcome based on a general description of the scheme. Record the question and who is following it up. Clear handovers help prevent one staff member believing that another has already checked.
Use a simple learning example
Create a fictional plan timeline and ask learners which information they would need before arranging additional support. The learning goal is recognising when to check the plan and seek clarification, not teaching staff to determine someone’s entitlement.
Review the workflow
Look at a recent scheduling question and identify where it slowed down. Was the right person available? Was the approved information easy to find? A short internal lesson can address that gap and sit beside your existing service coordination process.
NDIS funding periods: a practical team exercise
Trace a scheduling question
Create a fictional service request that needs a funding check. Map the information each role needs and identify who confirms it. Test the handover without expecting a support worker to decide a funding entitlement.
Review these questions
- Which plan information is current?
- Who is authorised to check it?
- Has a promise been made too early?
Agree one improvement, nominate the person responsible and choose when to review it. Keep the exercise separate from decisions requiring specialist advice or role-specific authorisation.
