The official update
The NDIS Commission states that new supported independent living Practice Standards apply from 1 July 2026. Its reform guidance emphasises participants’ voice, rights and freedoms. Providers should check the official standards and relevant registration transition information for their circumstances.

Start with life in the home
Think about everyday decisions: visitors, routines, shared spaces and the way staff offer assistance. A lesson should help workers notice when a convenient staff process starts to override a person’s preferences. Use an anonymised or fictional scenario, then invite discussion about the choices available to the participant.
Make the policy connection visible
Map each learning activity to the approved procedure it explains. Show workers where they can find the policy and whom to ask when preferences, safety or shared arrangements create a question. Avoid reducing person-centred practice to a checklist of tasks completed by staff.
Keep participant feedback in the review
A training record describes what workers completed. It does not tell you everything about how people experience the support. Consider accessible feedback and supervision conversations alongside learning records when reviewing whether staff practice is working well.
Build a focused refresher
You do not need to rewrite every course at once. Identify a few relevant changes, agree your internal interpretation and create a targeted refresher. Care Enable can assist with scenarios and provider-specific induction, while your leadership approves the final content.
SIL Practice Standards training: a practical team exercise
Discuss a household decision
Use a fictional situation involving a person’s preferred routine in their own home. Ask who should lead the decision, how preferences can be expressed and which approved procedure staff would use if a question remains.
Review these questions
- Whose convenience is driving the option?
- How is the person heard?
- What requires further advice?
Agree one improvement, nominate the person responsible and choose when to review it. Keep the exercise separate from decisions requiring specialist advice or role-specific authorisation.
